Recorded in 1957, “All Mornin’ Long” captures Red Garland during a particularly fertile period of his career. Already widely admired for his work with the Miles Davis Quintet, the pianist had developed a highly distinctive musical language, combining elegant melodic lines, characteristic block chords and a strong connection to blues and swing. Here he is joined by an outstanding group featuring John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Donald Byrd (trumpet), George Joyner (bass) and Art Taylor (drums).
At the heart of the album is the extended title track, a blues-based performance unfolding over more than twenty minutes with the freedom and natural flow of a jazz jam session. Its spacious structure gives the musicians ample room for individual expression while highlighting the interaction between Garland’s refined piano, Byrd’s lyrical trumpet and Coltrane’s increasingly exploratory tenor. Joyner and Taylor provide a flexible rhythmic foundation throughout, giving the ensemble both momentum and space.
Completing the program are George and Ira Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and Tadd Dameron’s “Our Delight”, moving from the elegance of a classic American standard to the rhythmic vitality of bebop. Together, the three performances reveal the range and remarkable chemistry of the group, making “All Mornin’ Long” a compelling portrait of Red Garland’s artistry and the creative energy of late-1950s hard bop.
