Recorded in New York on December 19, 1957, “Sonny Side Up” brings together three extraordinary figures of modern jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins. A founding figure of bebop and one of the most influential trumpeters in jazz history, Gillespie is joined by two of the most distinctive tenor saxophonists of their generation. The encounter places three strongly individual musical voices side by side, creating a session driven by virtuosity, spontaneity and a shared spirit of improvisation.
The group is completed by Ray Bryant (piano), Tommy Bryant (bass) and Charlie Persip (drums), whose flexible and swinging accompaniment provides an ideal foundation for the three soloists. Throughout the album, Gillespie’s brilliant trumpet, Stitt’s fluent bebop language and Rollins’ powerful, imaginative approach continually complement and contrast with one another, while the rhythm section responds effortlessly to the changing character of the music.
At the center of the album is Sonny Stitt’s extended “The Eternal Triangle”, a remarkable showcase for the interaction between the two tenor saxophonists. Stitt and Rollins exchange ideas with increasing intensity, revealing their contrasting approaches while Gillespie adds his unmistakable trumpet voice to the performance. The result is a vivid example of the creative competition and spontaneous dialogue that lie at the heart of jazz improvisation.
The relaxed swing of “On the Sunny Side of the Street”, the blues-inflected atmosphere of “After Hours” and the lively “I Know That You Know” reveal different sides of the ensemble and give the album a rich variety of moods. Energetic, playful and constantly inventive, “Sonny Side Up” captures six outstanding musicians in a memorable meeting, combining the immediacy of a great jam session with the musical personality of some of the defining figures of modern jazz.
