L'acustica del locale gioc\u00f2 un ruolo fondamentale: il piccolo club triangolare al piano interrato produceva naturalmente un suono caldo e ravvicinato. Vennero utilizzati registratori portatili Ampex con relativamente pochi microfoni: uno vicino al pianoforte, uno per il basso, uno per la batteria, pi\u00f9 un microfono ambientale per catturare l'atmosfera naturale del club.<br \/>\nQuesta configurazione minimalista \u00e8 in parte il motivo per cui la registrazione suona ancora intima e naturale.\nBill Evans (che aveva un impegno di due settimane al Village Vanguard con il suo trio) e il produttore Orrin Keepnews (co-fondatore della Riverside Records) decisero di registrare una sola domenica di esibizioni dal vivo, in set pomeridiani e serali.
